Our friends to the north grow perfect mussels. Raised in the pristine waters off Prince Edward Island, Canada, these sweet and tender P.E.I. Mussels are also good for you - packed with Omega-3s, iron, and B12 - making them a sustainably-soured, reasonably priced, perfect seafood choice.

Keeping It Fresh

Product Arrives Fresh

Fresh, whole mussels should last about 3-4 days in the fridge if you store them right. The key is to keep your mussels cold and moist. Place the mussels in a colander or bowl, cover with a wet dish towel and store in the bottom of the fridge. Do not put mussels directly in water or in a closed plastic bag. Keep them cold until you are ready to steam in water or broth. Discard any uncooked mussels that are open and don't close when tapped.

Preparation

Steaming mussels in a flavorful liquid is the best cooking method for these delicious shellfish.

Always start by rinsing the mussels under cold water to remove any sand, grit or algae. Place mussels in a pot with water, wine, beer or chicken stock. Add butter, mince garlic and shallots. Cover and cook at a gentle simmer for 5-8 minutes over medium-high heat. Give the pot a shake to move the cooking process along. Mussels are done when the shells pop open. Squeeze with lemon and serve.

You can also cook mussels in a spicy marinara sauce and bouillabaisse stew.

Discard any mussels that remain unopened after cooking.
